Are you Following God or Someone Else?

Are you Following God or Someone Else?

By Kristen Oliver

Lucas is in this adorable phase now where he needs a kiss every time he gets a boo boo, or thinks he does. It’s amazing because no matter how hard he is crying, mommy’s kiss makes everything better. This makes me think about our relationship with God. Whenever we get hurt, physically or emotionally, we usually turn to whoever will comfort us, sometimes it’s God, sometimes it’s not. However, I think God wants to be there for us during these hard times in our life. He wants to make everything feel better and quietly reassure us that it will be OK. During these times in my life I like to listen to worship music and allow it to say what I cannot. One of the songs I have recently been listening to is called, It Is Well by Kristene DiMarco and Bethel Music. My favorite part of the song says;

Through it all, through it all My eyes are on You Through it all, through it all It is well

Far be it from me to not believe Even when my eyes can’t see

And this mountain that’s in front of me Will be thrown into the midst of the sea

Through it all, through it all My eyes are on You Through it all, through it all It is well

So let go my soul and trust in Him The waves and wind still know His name

1) Do you rely on your own knowledge and understanding?

Or,  are you bringing your deepest hurts, regrets, questions and confusion before the Lord and saying, “through it all, it is well with my soul.” I ask this question because I have been in a place where I have relied on my own knowledge and understanding of my circumstances and it led to heartache and confusion. Although it is unnatural to not rely on our feelings, we have to, and should rely on what God says is true in the midst of our circumstances.

During my devotion time I came across this verse which inspired this post; Isaiah 11 verses 2&3 say; “The spirit of the Lord will rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the spirit of counsel and of might, the spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.”

This makes me think, if we are not in the word, praying and actively making an effort to live for God then we will not be able to be unbiased in our judgement, only when we are allowing God to govern our lives can he work through us. If you think what you have now is good, he wants to give you better. You have to do one thing, surrender to him, allow him to work in your heart, day by day. One thing at a time. Believe he can change your circumstances, even when it doesn’t make sense, or it feels impossible. God can do the impossible! Just believe! We cannot and are not God, lets not pretend we are. Without God in our lives everyday we are not doing what he would want for us. You may say, “I’m not as bad as that person,” or, “I have it harder than them and that’s why I can’t be as good as them.”

2) If you put the excuses, comparisons and reasons you can’t, or wont aside, what would you do? What would you change? Who would you help?

Imagine what it would look like if YOU wholeheartedly followed God, not someone else, if YOU let Gods word revolutionize YOUR life. I believe it would revolutionize others lives as a direct result. This is not something that happens overnight. We know that anything worth having takes work. If you want to lose weight, eat healthy and workout. If you want to play a sport, practice, practice, practice. If you want a relationship with God, you have to daily surrender to Him. You have to really want it.  A better life, better marriage, better relationships with your kids, a better job, control over your finances. Whatever it is for you. God can and wants to do it for you! He wants to start with YOU, not someone else, You. Time is going to pass whether you change anything or not. The question is;  What do you want your life to look like in 6 months, 1 year, tomorrow even?

3) What are you praying for?

We have to start now! God wants to do a good work in you now. By starting with prayer and asking God for the big impossible things we will start to see small changes just happening, opportunities you never had before, relationships strengthening that you thought were broken. I’m praying for wisdom, understanding, knowledge and counsel from the Lord. What are you praying for?

This is a prayer I prayed for myself. Feel free to make it your prayer or adapt it for your personal needs and requests.

God I pray that you would allow me to have the spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge and delight in the fear of you Lord. I know that you want to strengthen these areas of my life and I pray that through continual study and guidance from your word that I would be able to strengthen these areas so that I can use them to help others and show them your example. I pray that you would help me to lean not on my own

In Jesus name Amen
